Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
